Ok so many things happened and I was in no mood to post..

1. We found lodging at the Dusit in Korat. Nice town. We also managed to find a replacement thermostat. Apparently mine for no reason snapped at the stem! had to fish out bits from the lower bypass hose.
2. Managed to get rest in Korat.
3. 3 days on and attempted re-entry into Cambodia. DID NOT WORK. "Meng... I will find you"
4. Parked the cars at the casino.. arranged for a taxi to Siem Reap
5. Siem Reap and the temples have made me speechless.
6. Several temples and a few Margaritas and were back in Poipet to pick up the cars left at the Casino
7. Drive to Bangkok
8. Found really cool night market. Rodfai market.
9. Left Bangkok for lunch in Hua Hin
10. Started loosing power again. top RPM 4500, then 3500, then 2500 then 1500. limped up hills, trucks and scooters overtaking me. took us 18-19 hours to get to Hat Yai. i'm going crazy
11. left Hat Yai very low on power. max RPM 3500
12. Arrived Kedah, Malaysia. RPM 1500 max. car gave up outside a European car breakers yard. (How appropriate!) Rafi was in heaven!
13. Managed to restart car and limp to a nearby town. Found a mechanic who attempted to swap my Fuel Distributor out.. (against my wishes). couldnt start the car.. then turned the air fuel mixture.... still no heartbeat.
14. Replaced my original fuel distributor and car fired up. We jumped in and left. car had difficulty idling though as the air fuel mixture was all wrong but it was able to rev till redline.
15. Drove on highway ok.. accelerated very well but would die as soon as my foot was off the throttle. We then made it to Ipoh.
16. The next day whilst leaving Ipoh the car died and refused to start. Called a tow truck to arrange towing to KL where I will meet with NPK.
17. Arrived in KL. went to City Cycle. retuned, petrol filter replaced and car was as good as new! |Lovely lunch and visit to a Crayford W126
18. Sprint to Singapore without incident... in fact driving better than ever before!

You will find some white W124's running around the miniature Vegas area.
These cars are imported from S'pore after the expiration of COE.
Most of them are Masterpiece version and use primarily to ferry VIP guests
from the border.

It may appear that both Rafi's and your car are there to ferry VVIPs :)

Long story short. No customs clearance. They told us to come back in the
morning. So here we now are in the duty free zone between Thailand and
cambodia in what looks like miniature Vegas.

So fingers crossed. Tomorrow will be a better day!

We're leaving Hua Hin today. A very busy and colorful beach town. Much to see and do here. Passengers in good spirits. Bertha is not so well. I seemed to have had a drastic drop in power as soon as we filled up in Thailand.

Have been playing with the ignition timing to try and resolve the problem. We are now departing for Siem Reap.

Car ran well. It got smoother as the day progressed as it got decarbonized :). Tomorrow we are heading to Hua Hin.

Its been two years in the planning. Since our last trip up to Bangkok, there has been a strong yearning to go back up north and continue the exploration. In the interim there has been Red shirt/Yellow shirt issue and now floods but it really looks like its going to be happening.

Two cars this time around. Our 230TE and a 300TE-24. The route is as follows: Singapore -> Hat Yai -> Hua Hin -> Siem Reap -> Phnom Penh -> Seam Reap -> Bangkok -> Hat Yai -> Singapore.

Singapore COE prediction

I'm staking my claim! The COE is heading north till late 2014 or maybe mid 2015.
There are a confluence of factors that feed my claim. At this point i'd have to readily admit that its based on a feel and a couple of mental sums but where it lacks in hard quantitative science i hope to make up for it in convincing logic

So here goes, My feel is that the COE will rise till about mid 2015 and things should ease off from there till about 2019. This is based largely on the absence of cars from certain periods in COE history that will create flat spots in the market.

The 2011 cars.
For the last few years, cars registered around 1991 with COE renewals up to 2011 have been the staple of the COE market. These were 20 year old cars purchased during opportune low COE time and renewed during the days of $101 COE in 2001. The situation as we speak now is bleak for cars in this segment as with COE's in an all time high renewing these 20 year old cars will be something you'd have to think about very seriously about. Perhaps a few special cars will survive the 2011 COE but many who missed the boat of the march 2009 PQP of $3000+ will effectively see this segment of cars dissappear. Thus from 2011 onwards there will be no more circa 1991 cars.

1996-2004
between the years of 1996 to 2004 we see practically no more mid to low end cars on the market. In fact as of today, if you do a search for cars registered in the year 2000 on SGCARMART, you'll find less than 10. Of the lot, none are mid to low end cars like corollas, Civics and the like. Its the premium brands that live here. During this period we saw various COE spikes and high ARF values that encouraged people to scrap their cars when their financing broke even to 'upgrade' to a new car with similar bank repayments. The problem with the COE escalation that we will see till 2014 is that because the '96-'04 cars are missing and with the death of 2011 cars, there will effectively be very very little used cars on the market. Thus increasing the pressure onto the new car market and thus overheating the COE market. Even if the government relaxed the zero car growth policy, the pure demand will certainly outstrip the supply.

2005 onwards
Repreive I feel will come in 2015 when the 2005 cars will mature to a nice age of 10 and consider a 10 year PQP to fill in the demand for the vehicle shortage. That too should cool the COE prices down as owners will have more options. Its unlikely we will see further scrapping of 2005 and onwards cars as they were purchased relatively cheaply, and it may not be equitable for them to upgrade during the years of 2011-2014 as the COE (according to my prediction) will be through the roof...

So how high?
As I speak today, the big cc car COE is around $45,000. If the market looks good and no further adjustments are done by the LTA and no SARS or Swine flu outbreak to shatter market sentiment... we will hopefully see no more than $60,000. Some feel $100,000.

So lets see......

Just to add to your sleepless nights, here's an interesting instructional from w124-zone on centering your KE-Jetronic sensor plate.

Throttle Plate Adjustment and Airflow Body removal.

I highly recommend performing the follow procedure if
A) You have a throttle plate that does not travel up and down smoothly, or has no resistance at all.
B) Rough idling
C) Hard Starts

Factory PDF:
<—Adjusting and centering plunger.

<— Removing the KE-Jetronic body itself.
This procedure is pretty easy to do. Remove all fuel lines from the distributor, remove all necessary bolts holding the unit down and undo the ring clamp that holds the rubber boot to the throttle under the airflow body and lift up.

History

From the introduction of the W116 body to its end, approximately 20 Estate Wagons were built. Two famous owners were Sophia Loren and Rolf Harris. Today only 3 USA LHD wagons are known to survive, The total of 20 built includes 280SE and 350SE models. This car may be one of only 2 or 3 450SEL estate wagons in existence!

This one was sold on July 12 1977 by Chariot Motors in Poughkeepsie, NY. It was prepared by Harpers of Detroit and sold to a gentleman in Fraser Michigan. Later on it traveled to the Boston Area where I understand it was used for many years by a Mercedes Dealership in Cohasset Massachusetts. It shows 42,431 miles- the odometer works but I have no way to verify the mileage.

I have the original books, warranty, data plate, hang tag etc. The maintenance book was filled in only once, in June 1980, at 16,799 miles.

Condition

The car is not perfect, but it still looks great and turns heads. The acres of red paint and loads of chrome tend to overwhelm everything else! It handles great and drives like a Mercedes, and has no problem on the freeways.

Interior The leather is very good, but some of the carpet pieces are disintegrating. The dash is completely free of cracks and the wood trim is excellent. The car has a correct and working Becker Mexico AM/FM casette. For some reason I can't seem to fit the spare into its compartment- perhaps the spare is supposed to be a smaller size. The sunroof, windows, and door locks are all in working order.

Chrome The chrome is overall very nice. The alunimum trim has the typical clouding but not bad. There is some pitting in the roof rack

Body No dents. There some problem spots with rust: 3 places inside the left wheel wells, a spot by the fuel filler (under the paint) and a spot on the left side of the car also under the paint. There are some stress cracks in the paint on the left corner of the tail gate. The car was re painted many years ago. It still has a good shine but is certainly not perfect.

Miscellaneous The tailgate lift pistons are new- I had to have them made. They are very similar to the originals, and I also still have the original pair. The electric antenna and turn signals do not work.. There is no rear wiper blade. The tires (Firestone Afinity) are near new.

Mechanical The engine runs strong and the car rides great. It definitely needs the exhaust system partly or completely replaced. The A/C belt is not present- I don't know if the A/C system needs work or not.

Recent work The car has a completely new fuel system including pump, filter and damper. The fuel injection system including fuel distributor, nozzles, and warm up regulator were just replaced at a cost of over $2500.00

Ok saw the episode.. so Marge didnt really drive it.. What actually happened was that Marge in this episode was keeping up with the Joneses and met a socialite friend at the petrol station where she proceeded to help her friend fill up her TE with Petrol
